U.S. Approved Use of New Automotive Refrigeration
January 29, 2023
Sinochem New Network News US Environmental Protection Agency on February 28 approved a replacement for automotive air-conditioning refrigerant hydrofluoroolefin -1234yf (HFO 1234yf), its global warming potential is only 4. HFO 1234yf will be produced by a joint venture between Honeywell and DuPont.
Although HFC-134a, widely used in automotive air conditioners, does not destroy the ozone layer, its global warming potential is as high as 1,430. The US Environmental Protection Agency pointed out that for automobile manufacturers, to make cars and light trucks meet greenhouse gas emission standards, it is cost-effective to use a refrigerant with a lower global warming potential than HFC-134a. method. It is reported that from 2012 onwards, the United States required new sales of cars and light trucks to meet relevant greenhouse gas emission standards.
Thorens Hahn, vice president of Honeywell, said that with the approval of the US Environmental Protection Agency, the automotive industry can now use this lower global warming potential while also having high energy efficiency refrigerants, so that each new car The carbon footprint is greatly reduced.
It is reported that from the beginning of this year, the European Union banned the use of HFC-134a refrigerants, requiring the global warming potential of automotive air-conditioning refrigerants to be less than 150. Obviously, the new refrigerant fully meets the needs of the EU.
A Honeywell spokesperson stated that HFO 1234yf was successfully developed by DuPont and Honeywell, mainly to meet relevant EU regulatory requirements. Later this year, the joint venture company of both parties will begin commercial production of the product, first of all to those manufacturers that sell automobiles to Europe. The EPA's approval is a milestone in the history of the product.
