Teknor Apex Co.'s new vinyl extrusion compounds form a textured surface directly, eliminating the need for secondary processing such as topcoats or milling.
The material Apex 1545-D40ST is aimed primarily at automotive exteriors and molded parts where the textured surface remains unstained after prolonged outdoor exposure. The company, based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA, says the compound can be co-extruded and bonded to metal. Its physical properties are no less than standard PVC, and Teknor Apex can color materials in accordance with OEM standards, including black.
Steve McCormack, automotive business manager at Teknor Apex’s Vinyl Business Unit, says the compound is uniform, scratch-resistant, and resistant to harsh climate conditions. Its Shore C and D hardnesses are 60-70 and 34-44, specific gravity is 1.37-1.43, tensile strength is 8-18 MPa, and elongation at break reaches 150-250%.
